Rick Welts retired from his position as President and Chief Operations Officer of the Golden State Warriors following the end of the 2021 season. Rick’s impressive resume includes being part of the Seattle Supersonics, Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors front offices, as well as having an impressive stint in the NBA league office and being a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2018 . Rick started as a ball boy for the Supersonics in 1969, eventually working his way up to Director of Public relations, and was part of the 1979 championship team. From 1982-1999 Rick climbed the ladder in the NBA league offices, eventually becoming the third highest ranking executive as EVP, CMO and President of NBA properties. During his time in the league office Rick was essential in the creation of the All Star Weekend, the marketing of the “Dream Team” during the 1992 Olympics, and the creation of the WNBA. Rick served as president of the Phoenix Sun from 2002 to 2011, and joined the Warriors in 2011, serving as President & COO during three championship seasons, and helping to revitalize the franchise, including the opening of Chase Center. Just before joining the Warriors, Rick publicly came out as gay, making him the highest ranking openly gay executive in men’s professional team sports, and one of the first openly gay executives in the industry.
